Overview

This one-day workshop is inspired by the work of contemporary British artist Kurt Jackson, who is known for his expressive and immersive landscapes that capture the atmosphere, movement, and texture of nature. Jackson’s work blends painting, drawing, and mixed media, often incorporating text and found materials to deepen the connection to the landscape.

This session is designed to be relaxed and welcoming, encouraging you to engage with the landscape in a personal and expressive way. Your tutor, artist Eve Dawson, will introduce you to various techniques and methods to create your own stunning landscapes, inspired by the work of Kurt Jackson.

What Will I Study?

We will explore different ways to build up a painting using layers, textures, and expressive marks, drawing on Jackson’s approach to capturing a sense of place. This session encourages freedom in painting, allowing you to experiment with how a landscape feels rather than focusing on precise realism.

For this session, please bring images of a landscapes that inspires you. You can use holiday photographs, pictures from your local area, or any landscape that resonates with you. If you don’t have a suitable image, you can bring one from a magazine or book.

Entry Requirements

None. This session is open to those new to painting, as well as those with some experience looking to explore new techniques.

Materials

Acrylic paints are recommended, but watercolours can also be used. A mix of brushes will be useful, including larger ones for expressive marks and smaller ones for detail. Sponges, palette knives, and any other tools you like working with can also be helpful.

You can work on paper, in a sketchbook, or on canvas. Brown paper can add an interesting texture to your work.

Other materials that may be useful include graphite, ink, charcoal, and soft pastels for layering and mark-making. There will be no collage work in this session—everything will focus on painting and drawing techniques.

If you're unsure about what to bring, don’t worry—just bring what you already have at home. The tutor will have some materials available to share, so there’s no need to buy anything specific unless you want to.
