Overview

Willow weaving is a traditional craft that involves using flexible, natural willow rods to create functional and decorative items such as baskets, sculptures and garden structures.

On this two-day course, you will spend a creative and hands-on weekend learning this heritage skill, while making your own unique asymmetric basket, completed with your personally sourced rustic handle (see guidance below). This workshop introduces core basketry techniques in a relaxed, supportive environment, allowing you to explore both structure and artistic expression. By the end of the weekend, you’ll leave with a finished basket and the foundational skills to continue weaving independently.

What Will I Study?

  • How to select and prepare willow for weaving
  • Core basketry techniques including base-making, staking up and weaving sides
  • How to shape and control form to create an asymmetric design
  • Techniques for adding structure, strength, and visual interest
  • Finishing methods, including borders and attaching your chosen handle
  • Tips for drying, caring for and maintaining your basket

Entry Requirements

No prior experience is necessary. However, a reasonable level of hand dexterity is required to manipulate the willow effectively. If you have any concerns about your suitability for the course, please contact us in advance to discuss your needs.

Some use of sharp tools is required during the workshop. Please be aware and work in a safety-conscious manner at all times. Guidance on safe tool use will be provided.

Materials

All willow is included in the course fee, but you will need to source your own handle.  This is what will make your basket uniquely yours.

A piece of driftwood or a fallen branch makes an interesting handle.  The wood needs to be completely dry (to avoid shrinking), so do not use something recently pruned. The piece needs to be approximately 40cm in length and 2-4cm in diameter. A nicely curved branch will make a pleasing shape and it should be smooth to the touch so that it is comfortable to hold. Please sand down any rough parts before you come, but there will be sandpaper and a saw for final finishing during the workshop. If you cannot find anything suitable, the tutor will have a selection of branches you may use, but they may not be as interesting as one you find yourself!

Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, as working with willow can be messy.
