Overview

This course is designed to introduce learners to the ethos, purpose and core principles of Forest School. Learners will cover the key principles of Forest School practice and the role of adults in facilitating meaningful outdoor learning.

Although this course is open to anyone with an interest in learning more about outdoor learning, it is particularly valuable for early years practitioners, teaching assistants, parents, childcare staff and those working with children or young people. The award also supports professional development by providing a recognised CPD opportunity and a first step toward higher Forest School qualifications, such as Level 2 and Level 3. It helps practitioners build confidence, develop new skills and start using Forest School ideas in their own setting or educational role.

What Will I Study?

Forest School is an educational approach that supports holistic development through regular, learner-led experiences in a natural environment. Learners on this course will explore the philosophy behind Forest School, including its emphasis on child-initiated play, long-term engagement, supported risk-taking and close interaction with nature.

You will explore how these principles contribute to confidence, resilience, creativity and emotional wellbeing and will develop foundational knowledge of woodland environments and safe practice.

Assessment is through a portfolio of evidence, allowing participants to reflect on their learning and demonstrate their understanding through practical observations, written work and simple activity planning.

Entry Requirements
