Overview

In this relaxed and creative one-day workshop, we’ll explore bold colours, striking compositions, and mixed media techniques, inspired by Peter Blake and Andy Warhol. Taking influence from Blake’s layered, collage-based approach and Warhol’s graphic, high-contrast imagery, we’ll work with paint, drawing, collage, and other materials to create expressive and playful artwork.

This session is perfect for anyone looking to explore their artistic side and learn new techniques. No experience is needed to join - just an interest in art and colour!

What Will I Study?

You can choose to work on paper, canvas, or in a sketchbook, with no pressure to produce a finished piece. Instead, this session is about experimenting with different materials, layering techniques, and composition to develop your own creative ideas.

We will explore various techniques, such as combining painting, drawing, and collage for a mixed media approach. We will explore using bold, flat colours and striking contrasts to make an impact and will experiment with layering, texture, and mark-making to add depth and energy.

Entry Requirements

None - this course is open to all with an interest in art!

Materials

Please bring acrylic paints in bright, bold colours like red, yellow, blue, pink, etc. You will also need brushes (flat brushes for bold strokes and smaller brushes for details), as well as paper, sketchbook, or acrylic paper/canvas (whichever you prefer to work on). Scissors and glue (PVA or glue stick) for assembling collages. Please note we do have some paper, paint, brushes etc., but you may wish to bring your own to continue your work at home.

Please bring lots of paper imagery! (magazine cutouts, newspapers, posters, postcards, anything with bold or interesting visuals). Any drawing materials (pencils, charcoal, pastels, or anything you’d like to experiment with). Black fine liner pens or markers for outlining and adding detail. Any additional mixed media materials you’d like to incorporate (e.g. textured paper, stencils).
