Overview

This course is designed for complete beginners who want to learn the fundamentals of the Greek language. It will introduce the Greek alphabet, basic grammar and essential vocabulary. This course will give you a solid foundation in both spoken and written Greek. 

Homework is given on a weekly basis. To benefit most from the course, you will be encouraged to read the materials used during lessons.

What Will I Study?

Throughout the course, you will:

  • Learn the Greek alphabet and develop accurate pronunciation 
  • Build essential communication skills for everyday situations 
  • Learn to greet others and introduce yourself 
  • Exchange basic personal information (name, origin, address, job, family status) 
  • Use numbers and give simple answers 
  • Talk about the languages you speak 
  • Explore aspects of modern Greek culture and customs

Entry Requirements

This course is open to complete beginners with no prior knowledge of Greek. No formal qualifications are required, just a willingness to learn.

Materials

You may need to purchase a textbook, which will be discussed in the first session. You will need to bring a pen and paper for note-taking. Additional handouts and audio resources will be provided to support your learning. Access to a Greek-English dictionary is recommended. 

Progression

After completing this course, you may progress to the next level, Introduction to Greek Part 2, where you will further develop your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in Greek, subject to sufficient demand.
