Overview

This intensive one-day course offers participants the opportunity to learn the essentials of dressmaking and make a simple shift dress in a day. Guided by your tutor, you will gain hands-on experience in sewing techniques, fabric selection and garment construction, allowing you to walk away with a beautiful hand-made dress!

What Will I Study?

You will use a commercial pattern and will learn to understand how to prepare your template/pattern. You will also cover:

  • The meaning of pattern symbols 
  • How to position your fabric on the pattern
  • How to accurately cut out
  • What settings to use on the sewing machine
  • The best order to work in
  • How to stop fabric from fraying
  • What is a facing and how to make one

Entry Requirements

None, although some basic knowledge of using the sewing machine is preferable. If you are completely new to sewing machines, we strongly recommend you complete one of our short ‘Getting to know a Sewing Machine’ workshops before enrolling on this course. 

Materials

You will need to bring your own pattern - your tutor will advise beforehand as there are three potential choices. You will also need to bring your own fabric so that you can work in a style of your choosing.
