Overview

This course is for learners with approximately 3 years of French study who would like to go through some of the basics again while also studying some more advanced material. You will continue improving your ability to communicate and you will develop your knowledge of French culture.

Homework is given on a weekly basis. To benefit most from the course, you will be encouraged to read the materials used during lessons and refer to the course book.

What Will I Study?

You will expand your vocabulary and grammar using all four language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) on practical topics to enable you to communicate. You will be revising and learning the pronunciation of difficult sounds.

We will cover a range of topics, which may include: 

  • Talking about yourself – your family, hobbies, daily activities, past and future holidays
  • Learning how to communicate while shopping, travel and  going to the doctor's or chemist's

Some of the grammar points that we will study are:

  • Consolidation of the present tense including irregular and reflexive verbs
  • Immediate future tense with aller and the future tense
  • Past tenses, in particular the perfect and imperfect tenses
  • Pronouns: direct, indirect and emphatic pronouns.

Entry Requirements

To join at this level, you should have a good knowledge of vocabulary and present and the perfect tenses. You should be quite confident employing the perfect tense and have some knowledge of the Imperfect with regular verbs and most common irregular verbs. You should also have a good knowledge of the future tense.

You should be able to:

  • Talk about different topics using past and future tenses.
  • Understand daily simple conversations and simple instructions.
  • Write a complaint letter to a hotel, about a booking.
  • Write a letter or a text about your holidays to a friend.

Materials

Textbook will be discussed at the first session. Please bring pen, paper and a folder.

Progression

We offer a Semester 2 course in the summer term. It begins immediately after Semester 1 and is an integral part of the course, the exact length of which will be decided in the spring term. After completing this course students can progress to the next level of the language.
