Overview

This Songwriting and Poetry course provides an immersive journey into lyric writing, combining poetic craft with contemporary songwriting techniques. Led by Winchester-raised songwriter Ryan O’Reilly—whose work has amassed nearly 150 million streams globally and appeared in notable film and TV productions, this class blends literary study, creative exercises and group discussion to deepen students’ songwriting skills and lyrical expression.

What Will I Study?

Each week, learners will explore the art of storytelling by pairing classic poets and literary voices with influential singer-songwriters. You will examine how both poetry and music use language, rhythm and imagery to convey meaning and emotion. Alongside guided analysis and discussion, participants will also have the opportunity to share and workshop their own creative work, developing their personal voice as writers and storytellers.

Entry Requirements

While this course builds on the foundations of our Autumn term course, it is open to all and is ideal for anyone seeking to develop their poetry and lyrical skills. No previous knowledge or skills required.
