Peter Symonds College, Winchester, celebrated the academic and personal achievements of the 2025 cohort at its recent Awards Evening, welcoming back alumna and award-winning choreographer, Cathy Waller, almost 20 years after she left the College.

More than 70 students received awards recognising academic excellence, participation in college life, contribution to the community and overcoming personal challenges.

Principal Sara Russell praised the efforts of students of 2023-2025 and the families, staff and wider communities who had supported them. She also acknowledged the students’ creativity, curiosity and passion, and the College’s aim to help every individual grow not only as scholars, but as well-rounded people who are open-minded, ambitious, and committed to making a positive contribution to society.

Sara said: “The achievements we celebrate are truly exceptional. They are the result of our students’ commitment, perseverance, and determination, and it is a joy to see their efforts rewarded. I could not be more delighted - not only for our prize winners, but for all of our students who have worked so hard to reach their goals. Their accomplishments reaffirm that Peter Symonds continues to be a place where ambition is nurtured, and where resilience and determination prepare our young people to rise to future challenges with confidence.”

Cathy shared with the audience tales from her own professional journey, including anecdotes from her collaborations with the BBC, Tate Modern, Wembley Arena, and Sadler’s Wells. Cathy also reflected on how personal and professional setbacks shaped her resilience and creative growth.

Cathy is a member of the Symonds class of 2006 when she studied Dance, Sociology and Media A Levels.

She is an award-winning choreographer and movement director, with more than a decade of experience in contemporary dance and theatre.

After training at LABAN, she went on to choreograph and direct works that have toured nationally, appearing on prestigious stages such as Sadler’s Wells, Stratford Circus, West End Live and the National Theatre. Cathy founded the Cathy Waller Company in 2012 and alongside her artistic work, Cathy also serves as a consultant, supporting independent artists and arts organisations in areas such as strategy, finance, fundraising, and accessibility, ensuring that the arts are open and inspiring to all.

In attendance were students, their families, staff, award sponsors, college governors and VIPs associated with the College’s history.
