PETER SYMONDS STUDENTS ASPIRE AT THE GRESHAM COLLEGE ORACY COMPETITION
Peter Symonds rose to the challenge of the prestigious Gresham College Annual Oracy Competition in central London recently, with five of the 13 Symonds students also being highly commended. A total of 430 students participated from the length and breadth of the country, and only those in the top 100 were highly commended.
The competition provides a platform for Year 12 students from state establishments to present their communication and oracy skills before a gruelling judges’ panel, by delivering answers to one of a series of pre-set questions. Students researched and presented on a variety of issues ranging from how music can be used to help manage and support improved mental health, to how ChatGPT could affect the future of education.
Sabina Labrow, Head of Extended Project Qualification and Oxbridge Tutor, said: “This is a magnificent achievement for all 13 Symonds students who participated. We are incredibly proud of how they have hit the ground running at the very start of their sixth form journey, and to be highly commended is the icing on the cake.
“Since the COVID-19 pandemic we’ve seen a more widespread shift to digital learning, but it is absolutely critical to remember the impact that being an effective public speaker can make. These essential skills will stand all students in good stead at, and beyond, sixth form, preparing them for future employment and higher education.”
Inspirational historical figures associated with Gresham College include some of the luminaries of the scientific revolution including Robert Hooke and Sir Christopher Wren.
