Overview

This short course will encourage you to think creatively and experimentally with painting and drawing experiences, both abstract and figurative. The primary requirement is that you would like to explore paint in playful and sometimes unfamiliar ways, finding unexpected effects, and ‘accidents’ whilst essentially…having fun! To quote Picasso ‘Every child was born an artist, the trick is remaining one as an adult when we grow up’. The idea of learning, or even ‘unlearning’ through experimentation and playfulness is a key aim of this course. A range of artists will be introduced to inform and lend extra meaning to the practical activities.

What Will I Study?

You will take part in a variety of drawing and painting activities designed to help you think more laterally about the visual world and how we see it, to see it with more potential for imagination and personal expression. The tutor will lead from the front with practical demonstrations to help support you in the activities.

There will be ‘warm-up’ activities as well as one or two collaborative group activities, with some intermittent group discussions to reflect on your experiences. Activities will enable students to explore ways to suggest movement, form, light, colour, texture and other visual elements through a combination of considered observation and spontaneous mark making, using a range of ad hoc and more traditional art materials and tools.

The aim will always focus on the process and the creative journey rather than a preoccupation with the outcome. Outcomes will take care of themselves!

What topics will we be covering?

  • Ways to suggest Movement through expressive mark making and graduations
  • Exploring relationships between light, colour and space
  • Exploring colour in relation to tone and work with a considered ‘colour palette’
  • Ways to visually take advantage of positive / negative space in composition
  • Working confidently, openly and creatively in one's own art
  • Exploring Picasso’s idea that ‘every child was born an artist’
  • Creating your own interpretations based on the painting and drawing activities
  • Using collage to explore a range of creative compositions
  • Finding positive potential in one's art when things seem to get out of control or 'go wrong'
