Discounted rail travel for students

Winchester Rail Station is a ten minute walk from college. Many of our students travel to and from college by train. The Department for Transport announced the launch of a new rail card on 2nd January 2019 which will benefit 16-17 year olds. This rail card offers 16-17 year olds 50% discount off rail travel and will be available from September this year. We are expecting this card to be available to purchase online from South Western Railway during August. Students will be able to use this card to purchase rail tickets at the station and receive 50% discount. As far as we know, these tickets will not be available through the College. Unfortunately, we do not have any further information available on this, including how much the discount card will cost or when it will become available to purchase. It is also unclear whether the card will cease to be valid on a student’s 18th birthday.

As we are currently unable to confirm details of this scheme, the Scholar tickets available to purchase through the College for the Autumn term will be valid until the half term break, 25th October 2019. These tickets will have the usual 34% discount applied to them, and so still represent a saving over the standard season ticket price. We are offering these Scholar tickets as an interim measure until we know more on the discount card. This is so that all students have the opportunity to purchase a rail ticket with some level of discount in time for the beginning of the term.

We should know more on the 50% discount card, by the time this ticket expires, and we will share information with students and parents. However, scholar tickets will be available to purchase again through the College for the second half of the Autumn term, should you need to purchase through us. Hopefully by this time students will be able to choose between the two schemes depending on their age etc.

We understand that many people will prefer to wait to learn more about the details of the new scheme later in the summer. We would just remind you that if you wish to buy the Scholar ticket our deadlines will still apply so that we can place orders with SWR on our pre-agreed dates. The deadline for new students to purchase a Scholar ticket through the college shop will be midnight on Thursday 29th August 2019.

Discounted rail passes (Scholar Season Tickets) are available to buy on a termly basis only from college. Prices represent a 34% discount on the price of a normal season ticket. Tickets are used for travel to Winchester from a chosen destination. They can also be used for evening and weekend travel during term times.

How to buy a Scholar Season Ticket

When a student receives their enrolment appointment date and time, they can log in on their Apply account to purchase a rail pass. Clicking on this link in the tasks section will take them through to the site where you can order and pay for a Scholar Season Ticket. Prices vary according to the length of term and station travelled from.

Rail Photo ID

Students carry a photo ID card with their season ticket. These are made up in college and issued with the season ticket. It is essential that students hand in or send a passport size photo of themselves in advance, to Student Services in college. Their name and train station should be written on the back of the photo. The photo must be handed in during Enrolment Week at the latest, not brought on the first day of term.

Deadlines

Because we order over 1000 tickets each term there are strict deadlines for purchasing the Scholar Season Ticket. The deadline for purchasing a Scholar Season Ticket for the Autumn term is midnight on Thursday 29 August. Tickets ordered after this date will be subject to delay. Costs incurred whilst waiting for a season ticket to arrive will not be reimbursed.

Collecting your Scholar Season Ticket

Orders placed by the deadline will be available to collect from Student Services in college from Monday 9 September. The price of the season ticket takes into account that the student pays for their first journey into college. Costs for this journey are therefore not reimbursed.

The process outlined above is strictly adhered to. In placing an order for a Scholar Season Ticket you are agreeing to the terms set out above. Thank you for your support in this matter.
