Peter Symonds College Awards Evening – Celebrating the College Champions!

The ceremony paid tribute to the successes, both academic and personal, of the whole 2018 year group. Also among the audience celebrating the successes of the students were sponsors from local businesses, schools and universities together with parents, teachers and guest speaker Mr Kevin Ashman.

Principal Sara Russell opened proceedings by welcoming the students of 2016-2018 back to the College and thanked them for playing such an active role in the College community. She praised them not only for their excellent exam results but also for their accomplishments across the board in sport, activities and the arts.

Mr Kevin Ashman, professional quizzer currently appearing on BBC TV show Eggheads and described by presenter Jeremy Vine as “probably the cleverest man in the English-speaking world”, was a student at Peter Symonds at the time it made the transition from an all-boys grammar school to a sixth form college. Kevin said “It’s a great honour to be invited to celebrate the successes of these students, especially as this year marks the 40th anniversary of my graduation from Peter Symonds. I had some fantastic teachers who were very inspirational. Rather than learning by rote, they taught us to develop critical thinking and active learning, and it’s wonderful to see that continuing today.”

Mr Ashman concluded his speech saying “One thing that hasn’t changed is the quality of results, quality of teaching and quality of the students. Well done to all at Peter Symonds and long may it continue.”

The College’s exceptional pass rate at just over 99% in full A level should see Peter Symonds ranked yet again amongst the very best performing colleges in England and Wales when the official, country-wide, A level league tables are published in 2019.
