The Geography department at Peter Symonds College recently hosted an inspirational talk by Roy Wood of MapAction. MapAction is a UK charity which deploys volunteers to disaster-hit areas across the world, gathering crucial data at the scene and conveying it visually in the form of maps. By creating this ‘shared operational picture’ for aid agencies, governments and local partners the charity helps ensure that aid is quickly sent to the right places.

Roy, a trustee of the charity, spoke to the College’s Geography Stretch & Challenge Group, comprising students with a particular interest in the subject. They were fascinated to see how the topics they learn about in class are used to such practical effect in saving lives. They were particularly interested to see how the Geographical Information Systems programmeArcGIS, which they learn how to use at Peter Symonds, is used to save lives in disaster-hit areas.

Says Lauren Lewis, Head of Geography, “MapAction gave a highly engaging and motivating presentation to our A level Geographers. Our students are learning to use ArcGIS and it was fantastic to understand the value of this resource in so many disaster zones, where it is being used to save lives and build resilience.”

Every year significant numbers of students from the College progress to universities to study Geography and the Group helps give them a wider and deeper understanding of the application of their subject.
