Symondians grants

Five subjects have been awarded £1,000 each and three sports shared a £1000 award as sponsorship for individual subject projects by The Symondians Association.

The Symondians Association, founded in 1911, provides a focus for ex-pupils/students and teachers to keep in touch and meet at a series of social and sporting events.

In addition, the Association increasingly works with the College to provide support for specific departmental initiatives and occasionally individual students.A further three music students were awarded bursaries to purchase music related equipment and/or undertake music related courses and activities.

Ian Millar (Secretary) and Steve Hankin (Treasurer) were both present to award the generous grants to the Heads of Subjects successful in their sponsorship bids. English Language and Literature, Maths, BTEC Business, Art and the Extended Project Qualification were all granted £1000 each for individually chosen subject projects, to enrich their students learning. The Symondians additionally made a £1000 award to the Sports Department, to be shared equally between Equestrian, Cheerleading and Cricket activities.

The awards will make a real impact on the individual subjects and sports. Whilst Mark Jones, Head of Art, plans to use the grant to invite external speakers to come in to the College and spend four full days with the students throughout the year, Sabina Labrow, Head of EPQ, will use the money to help her students purchase the important, yet often costly, equipment for some of their exciting projects.

Said Ian Millar: “This year we decided to move away from individual candidate sponsorship and have chosen to grant subjects the sponsorship instead. We ran a departmental competition which revealed some excellent subject candidates to receive sponsorship, which in turn will benefit many more students. We’re also keen to raise the profile of the Association within the College and encourage leavers to join us.”
