Four groups of enterprising Peter Symonds Level 2 Business students have been successful in their bids for a start-up loan, from famous dragon Peter Jones CBE.

The Level 2 Business Students are currently taking part in ‘Tycoon in Schools’, a National Enterprise competition launched in 2012 by Peter Jones CBE, and supported by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

‘Tycoon in Schools’ was developed to allow students to start and run a business whilst at school or college, thereby allowing them to gain valuable hands-on experience as to what is involved in running a business.

Peter Jones CBE said: “I am thrilled that Peter Symonds College is taking part in this year’s Tycoon in Schools competition which is providing students across the country with their first taste of enterprise.

“I am very excited to see the innovative and creative business ideas come to fruition and wish all students participating from Peter Symonds the very best of luck. Watch this space – we could have the next global business tycoon in the making!”

To ‘kick-start’ the competition, local entrepreneurs Chris Rees (ReesLeisure), Sam Gavins (Sam Gavins Photography) and Steven Northam (IncuHive) came in to the College to speak to the students about their experiences of setting up their own successful businesses.

The students then split into groups and set up four ‘Tycoon’ companies, pitched their ideas to a panel of senior Peter Symonds staff and completed their business plans. The plans were then submitted to the competition for which they have all just succeeded in securing their start-up loans. The companies have now started trading and they hope to make a good profit, which will be donated to a charity of their choice, before they cease trading on 15th December.

Says Jill Thomson, Head of Business, “The students have made a great start to their business course - it has been a real pleasure to see their entrepreneurial skills shine through and watch their confidence grow”.
