Peter Symonds College staff, students and their families and friends celebrated the achievements of 82 students at this year’s Awards Evening. The ceremony paid tribute to the successes, both academic and personal, of the whole 2017 year group. Also among the audience celebrating the successes of the students were sponsors from local businesses, schools and universities together with parents, teachers and guest speaker Mr Will Champion.

Principal, Stephen Carville, kicked the evening off by welcoming the students back to the College and thanked the students of 2015-2017 for achieving, yet again, so highly across the board. He praised them for playing such an active role in the College community, noting that their excellent accomplishments went far wider than just the academic and also included sport, activities and the arts. Stephen then welcomed Guest Speaker Will Champion to say a few words adding: “We are enormously privileged and honoured that you have given up your time so freely to help us celebrate the enormous successes of so many young people, each and every one of them a member of the Peter Symonds Family.”

Mr Will Champion, musician and vocalist best known as the drummer and backing vocalist of the rock band Coldplay, was a student at Peter Symonds just over twenty years ago. Said Will, “What struck me about Peter Symonds, and still strikes me now, is that a large degree of independence that was afforded to the students. We were treated like young adults, not children. The college fostered an atmosphere of academic excellence but also allowed people to express themselves through sport, art and music, and I really felt, for the first time, that there were options out there for people like me, and that there were indeed other people like me. The college was helping to provide me with the skills to succeed and to take advantage of whatever opportunities might come my way”

Will drew to a close by advising the students, “So I think, more than ever, the opportunities for the future are going to rely upon people having excellent social skills, being collaborators and critical thinkers, communicators, and being able to find the situations where these skills are valued, as much as I believe they are at Peter Symonds.” He ended by wishing the students the very best for the next exciting phase of their journey.

Jake Mace thanks Will

The College’s exceptional pass rate at just over 99% in full A level should see Peter Symonds ranked yet again amongst the very best performing colleges in England and Wales when the official, country-wide, A level league tables are published in January 2018.
