Hot on the heels of their hugely successful Progression Fair, Peter Symonds Careers Department held their annual Careers Week, in which lecturers and professionals from over 40 different universities and organisations took part. Symonds students had the opportunity to listen to and meet experts from a wide variety of different industries and organisations, including meteorology, chemistry and midwifery.

Careers week Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson, a Civil Engineer from Skanska, spoke to fascinated students about the many different careers that studying Civil Engineering can lead to.

Said Jennifer: “At their age I didn’t know what civil engineering was and I found myself steered more toward studying mainstream, academic subjects. I wasn’t aware that, if you are competent at maths and physics, there are lots of different opportunities within the civil engineering profession.”

The 55 talks were spread over four days, with every Lower Sixth student attending at least one session. Speakers included Radio 4 - The Life Scientific broadcaster Prof. Jim Al-Khalili, who spoke about Physics and University of Southampton Oceanography lecturer Dr Simon Boxall, who appears regularly on television speaking about climate change.

Samantha Cooper, who is hoping to study medicine, attended the Medicine and the Ambulance Service talks and found them very beneficial. “I thought they were really informative and interesting. It was great to get a feel for Cardiff University, as well as the roles you'd have as a paramedic. The talks taught me what extras you might need to prepare for both courses. I found the opportunity to ask questions and get feedback from people in the profession really useful.”

Most popular this year were the talks focusing on Law, Psychology and Business. These talks, along with the rest of the talks given during Careers Week, encourage Peter Symonds students to work hard towards achieving their career aspirations.

By facilitating Careers Week, the Careers Department offers students an exciting opportunity to find out what it’s like in the real world and find out about different opportunities and paths available to them.
