BOARDING AT PETER SYMONDS

Students in boarding houseThere are two boarding houses at Peter Symonds College: Falkland Lodge and School House which are both co-educational. Both houses are on the campus itself. Falkland Lodge was opened in September 1998 and provides accommodation in single or twin-bedded rooms while School House is a handsome Victorian building in which students share 2, 3 or 4 bedded rooms.

As a boarder you will meet students from a variety of backgrounds. Many have parents in the Forces and the College provides sixth form education for the Falkland Islands.

Some students living further afield in Hampshire find it necessary to board, for example to participate in the Specialist Music Course. Some students will have spent many years in boarding and others will have come to it for the first time.

The accommodation in each house is centrally heated. There are common rooms with televisions and DVD players and also computer rooms. The houseparents live in the houses and are supported by other houseparents, part-time tutors and other assistants.

You will eat together in the College dining room and may also make snacks in the houses. You will do your own personal laundry and look after your own financial affairs. You are free to go away at weekends as long as appropriate arrangements are made. The boarding houses are closed during College holidays and half-term holidays.

The regulations are simply those necessary to enable the smooth running of a large 'family' and to encourage academic work. During the working week the houses are kept quiet for study from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm. You will be expected to return to the houses by 10.20pm and to be upstairs and quiet by 10.30. (Exceptions occasionally being made when really necessary). At weekends you may stay out later. Visitors are welcome at certain times.

Boarding Fees

The boarding fees for September 2010 were £10,536 per annum for Falkland Lodge and £9,822 for School House. The rooms in Falkland Lodge have en-suite facilities, hence the higher charge. Fees for 2011/12 will be published in due course. If your son or daughter is offered a boarding place, we will then ask for a deposit of £500 which will only be considered for refund once they have completed their studies here.
