Theatrical and Media Make-up Diploma is a technical level qualification aimed at 16-18 learners who are in a full-time Level 3 education programme and wish to pursue a career as an employed and/or self-employed make-up artist, providing hair and make-up services in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries.

Course Content

This qualification is based on the national occupational standards for theatrical and media make-up and includes all the required elements to work effectively as a make-up artist in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries. Learners must achieve all mandatory units which include:

  • Health and safety in the salon

  • Cosmetic make-up science

  • Media make-up

  • Style and fit postiche

  • Photographic make-up

  • Anatomy and physiology for make-up services

  • Airbrush make-up

  • Cosmetic camouflage

  • False eyelash application

Methods of Teaching

Throughout this qualification, learners will develop their knowledge and understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology and health and safety. They will also develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to provide a wide range of creative make-up services in media, theatre, and fashion and photographic settings. Learners will also style and fit hair pieces and apply false eyelashes as well as understand the related cosmetic science that underpins the subject. In parallel, learners will develop their communication and customer service skills, their awareness of environmental sustainability and their commercial skills,

all of which are valued highly by employers. Problem solving and research skills will also be developed.

In addition to completing mandatory units, learners are required to complete three optional units. A variety of optional units are available which include:

  • style hair using a variety of techniques

  • individual eyelash extensions

  • create and caste small prosthetic pieces and bald caps

  • plan a showcase event

  • colour theory

  • visual arts concepts

  • design visualisation

  • face and body art

Where Could It Take Me?

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become members of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC) or Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT). As a specialist make-up artist, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

  • Professional make-up artistry settings working with performers

  • Theatre, film, print media, photographic studios

  • Beauty and/or hair salons

  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home based settings

  • National Health Service

  • Product manufacturing and training

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at Level 4 in one or more of the following areas:

  • salon management

  • specialist hair and scalp services

Entry Requirements

GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above is preferable.  If this level has not already been achieved, students will be expected to re-take their GCSE subjects alongside their course. A passion for the subject is essential, and previous relevant experience is desirable.
