PETER SYMONDS COLLEGE | NATIONAL VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
NATIONAL VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
What is an NVQ?
National Vocational Qualifications are qualifications that are based on a candidate proving competence in a specific role within the workplace. NVQs do not have taught classroom sessions or examinations. The candidate can gain the competence from experience within the work place, from other colleagues or from training sessions. They then gather evidence of that competence which is assessed by a personal assessor.
What NVQ's are on offer at ACE?
- A1 Assessor Award
- V1 Verifier Award
- Health and Social Care
- Leadership and Management Award
- Childcare and Teaching Assistants
- iTQ - a business focussed NVQ in IT skills
- Business Courses
- New NVQs for Schools, Colleges and University Staff
How are NVQ's run at ACE?
At Peter Symonds' College ACE we run NVQs as they are designed to be run, i.e. within the workplace, not within the College. A typical programme to gain an award might be:
- Individual Induction Session
- Personal Training Programme (if required)*
- Evidence Gathering and Portfolio Building
- Assessment
- Verification
- Certification
*You may need very little, if any, training, especially if you have been working in your role for some time. Many people complete NVQs without additional training: they are able to prove that they are already working in a competent way.
If you do require training it can be provided in various ways such as:
- In your workplace
- Enrolling on a relevant course if one is available
- With an individual trainer
- Through computer based multimedia learning
- Through self study
The NVQs in Child Care, Teaching Assistants and the iTQ all involve classroom based sessions at college (either at the ACE Centre in Weeke, or the Owens Road site of Peter Symonds College).
